Nothing cuts into a well planned road-trip to your next RV Resort destination like a night spent by the side of the road baby sitting a disabled RV. Not only is valuable family time being chipped away, but it could create a potentially unsafe situation for you and your family. Moreover, the threat that's created to your travel budget could be severe. What steps can you take to avoid "the breakdown" being the most vivid memory of this years road trip?
Your RV Maintenance Schedule
With the help of your RV Owners and Maintenance Manual, prepare a maintenance schedule checklist with room to log all of the what-when and whys of your routine maintenance. This is probably the single most important item to consider in preventing road side nightmares. Preventive RV Maintenance means keeping a check on items that may cause a breakdown, and handling them before you hit the road. Many items can be easily handled yourself: Checking the fuel and air filters, brake pads and fluid, all the hoses, and inspecting your tires for uneven wear before your trip is a no-brainer and can usually be done in under an hour. Schedule a visit to your service technician to take care of maintenance items that are beyond your comfort level.
Trust but verify.
The famous Russian phrase "doveryai, no proveryai" (Trust but Verify) made famous by Ronald Reagan, says it best when it comes to the work being done on your RV. If your RV service technician recommends service to your RV whether a new part, fluid replacement, suspension work, or whatever, ask questions! Is it normal for this part to need to be replaced now? Have any other parts been affected by the wearing out of this item? May I see the worn part? If you receive satisfactory answers to your questions, approve the work and ask if you can watch the repair being made. If at any time your confidence level in the RV Service Technician starts to wane, don't be afraid to take your business somewhere else.
If you're not familiar with the RV service centers in your area, asking the staff at your RV Resort to recommend a good facility is probably your best bet. Once at the repair facility, make certain to mention the RV Resort that recommended you to them. If you feel you received good service, make certain to recommend them to other RV Owners.
